Wouldn't it be much "better" to ditch using hot water altogether? What are
we becoming, wimps? The cavemen didn't have hot water, why do we need it?

The biggest thing any individual can do is to install solar hot water. There
are now evacuated tube solar heaters (Aussie invention - manufactured in
Germany due to lack of Aust interest which I guess is typical today) that
can provide hot water even on overcast winter days. They are even used in
Europe (and starting to be used here) to provide hot water for hydronic
heating in winter.
